Toot toot, puff puff, chugga, chugga

The Albatross

Today's master plan involved going to the National Railway Museum, which is meant to even be interesting to sane people. It is rather impressive with a very large collection of things that go puff, woosh and toot. It’s only 10 minutes from where we are staying and free (although they do squeeze you for a donation which I really don’t mind).

We started with royal trains, which took a while to register, as when you walk onto the platform all the banners just show union jacks, it’s only when you turn around at the end that you see the pictures of the appropriate royal. Anyway, not bad.

A few random 60’s and 70’ trains later, we went to the grand hall. There were lots there. We even saw one spin around. There were some very big ones, some funky art deco ones, some very old ones and the world’s fastest steam one.

In the next hall was a huge tribute for one that went all the way to Scotland (quickly). At the back of this room were cases and cases of stuff they really didn’t know what to do with.

Next, we staggered over to the South Gate and leant a lot about Henry VII which I’ve already forgotten, but assume was very important. I was allowed to put on a helmet which was heavy and hurt my neck.

Lunch time was in a Japanese restaurant where we had a bizarre bento box each. For some reason my Katsu Pork came with a side of sweet and sour chicken, whilst Tuna’s Chicken Katsu was accompanied by a beef in black bean. Both came with fruit salad?  It’s a long way to Japan.

Next, we went to Barley Hall a ‘restored’ 14th century house. Restored is a bold term when only about 2 pieces of timber remained. It was very clean, very straight and very boring.

My knees were screaming by this point after 2 days of walking around on stone, so after a therapeutic ale and the purchase of dinner ingredients we shuffled off home. The really highlight of York awaits tomorrow morning. Excited.
