Picnic in Kew Gardens, Part II

The Albatross

Sunday 02 June 2019

Having failed in our attempt at Kew Gardens last trip, the plan was to rectify this and head over today. However, we failed again, deciding instead to just go do Ham House which is walking distance. With Master James as tour guide, we first wandered past Marble Hill House, an old estate built by George the 2nd to house his mistress. Very pretty grounds on a balmy British morning.

One of the reasons we bailed on Kew Gardens is that it was a hot 27 degrees here (why does 27 degrees feels so warm here) and we knew Kew Gardens would be heaving with hour long queues.

Having caught a small ferry across the Thames we arrived at Ham House, only to find it not opening for an hour and a half. Bugger.

Anyway, we wandered back down the Thames into Richmond, via an ice-cream stop for James. Everywhere was packed as all the geezers enjoyed their two days of summer, baking themselves till developing a warm pink colour. Fortunately, we grabbed a table at a local German beer garden on the river banks enjoying a few ales, bratwursts, schnitzels and pretzels under some shady trees. Very British.
