Farewell London, a quickie through Oxford

We only had two main things to do today. One, pick up the car. Two, drive to our accommodation in Bretforton. We achieved both, but the first was quite painfully long. There was 20 minutes of paperwork and he wanted to know what flight we were leaving on. Huh? Then as we said we would pick the car up at 9.30am, it wasn’t ready until exactly that time. Apparently, it was being washed.

Anyhow, we eventually got underway and did a reasonably quick exit out of London without any wrong turns. Must have been my awesome navigation skills.

First stop was Oxford and do some sightseeing. The Bodleian Library is supposed to be one of the world’s oldest libraries. Unfortunately, the only way in is via a guided tour, which I get. The tourists couldn’t talk quietly outside in the quad, so would keep them out too. There was also a very pretty round building next door (Radcliffe Camera), which they keep tourist out of too.

The Pitt Rivers Museum is supposed to be a quirky collection of stuff that had been collected from around the world and put in a museum. It is right beside the Natural History Museum, which is what we went into and wandered around. It was cool, lots of dinosaur bones. We didn’t make it into the Pitt River Museum as we kinda forgot about it until we’d left Oxford.

Now it was lunchtime and we were on the look out for a suitable pub, the darker the better. Couldn’t find the dark pub, but found The Crown tucked down a little alley way. With our energy levels reset by a beer and a burger, we set off again. Our next stop was Christ Church College, the biggest of Oxford’s colleges. Not sure it was worth the visit. There were very limited places you could walk and the ‘Great Hall’ was closed and wouldn’t open for about an hour. Next.

Magdalen College. Now that was worth the visit. We could wander around and admire how perfectly cut and edged the lawns were. But you aren’t allowed to walk on them.

They also have deer. Which looked delicious.

Feet sore, time to get back into the Hyundai and drive down some more narrow roads.

We had to make a stop at the world’s most infuriating supermarket, Lidl, to pick up supplies.

We have booked 4 nights at a lovely self-contained apartment in an old converted dairy on a working equestrian farm. Fantastic apartment.
